Late Roman Empire, Mid-fourth century CE. England, silver.This elaborate piece depicts woship of Bacchus, who is shown first and foremost in a circular emblem of Oceanus in the center. Dolphins are in his hair, and his beard is made of seaweed. The circle is bordered by shells, and other marine animals surround the edges. In the outer ring of the dish, Bacchus presides over a celebration of dancing and wine, with Herculeus already so drunk that he is passing out, and women draped in light, flowing garments. Both depictions of Bacchus allude to his worship, thus this platter was either the possession of a wealthy worshipper of Bacchus, or a religious temple object, meant for public display.
